Cleaning Checks
We conduct monthly cleaning inspections at our single student housing apartments, including Casa Dea and the University Bungalows. Cleaning checks are not conducted at our married housing complexes, such as Hope Valley and Inca Villa.
You should receive an email approximately one week before a scheduled cleaning inspection. Please review the checklist carefully to ensure your unit is prepared.
The shared living areas are divided into four sections, all four must be completed—even if there are fewer than four people live in the apartment.
Each resident is expected to:

Clean their own bedroom, and
-
Complete at least one shared area from the checklist.
Failed cleaning checks may result in a cleaner being hired at the tenant's expense.
If you are going to be out of town, you are still responsible for your portion of the cleaning. Please clean your assigned area before leaving, arrange for another roommate to complete your tasks, or schedule an alternate inspection with the office in advance. You do not need to be present for the inspection.

Clean Check Tips
Blinds
The best way to clean the blinds is with two microfiber towels—one wet and one dry. Go slat by slat, wiping first with the wet towel, then with the dry one. Be sure to clean around the strings as well. Check from the side to spot any remaining dust or streaks.
Microwave
An easy way to clean the microwave is to steam it: microwave a cup of water for 1 minute, then let it sit with the door closed for 5 minutes. Afterward, wipe down all interior surfaces with a rag or paper towel, focusing especially on the top and underneath the rotating plate.
Shower Glass
The best way to clean and prevent hard water spots on shower glass is to spray a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe with a microfiber cloth or non-scratch sponge. For tough spots, use baking soda. Once the hard water stains are removed, Windex can be used for regular cleaning.
Shower Floor and Walls
The most effective way we’ve found to clean the shower floor is to use Blue Dawn dish soap and a medium-bristle scrub brush. To remove mildew, spray a mildew remover (store-bought or a mix of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water) on the affected areas, let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then scrub and rinse thoroughly with warm water. Dry the area with a towel and keep the space ventilated to help prevent future mildew. Be sure to remove all soap scum from the walls. To check if it’s clean, run your fingernails over the tile—if white residue comes off, you’ll need to scrub again.
Oven
The ovens have a self-clean function, which is an effective way to clean them. Be sure to remove the racks and lock the oven, as it gets extremely hot. The cycle can take several hours, so plan accordingly. After the self-clean cycle, you may still need to spot clean or wipe out any remaining residue. For tougher spots, Comet or Bar Keepers Friend used with a scrub brush or scrubbing sponge works well.
